New Name. New Experience.

Best Packaging is pleased to announce their participation in this years PackEx …..this years show has partnered with ADM Toronto and is being held on May 16 -18 2017 at the Toronto Congress Center.

In the industry, many of are used to seeing piles of unused rolls of packaging tape – clearly marked with NFG…. we all know what that means…..

Wasted rolls, tape breaking, not sticking to cartons are all typical reasons why production lines toss rolls of unfinished tape into a pile, use it in a tape gun to avoid more waste or simply throw it out. This wastes money and time in production.

Not all tapes are the same and there are tapes designed for different environments and specific applications. Choosing wisely is more then just your bottom line; tape ensures that your cartons of product remain sealed during delivery to your customer or end users. We find so many times that companies will cut costs on their tape ONLY to end up buying more of the less expensive product due to the issues they experience.


If your cartons are popping open during cold freezer transport – you may need to look at your tape and ensure those factors have been considered.
If your tape is not sticking after application – you can perhaps take a look at your cartons and ensure your tape is designed for highly recycled content.
If your tape leg is peeling – you may want to consider your tape application and check the tension of your equipment.

Here at Best Packaging Systems, we are always ready for change! We love the Spring; with everything so fresh and new….it just seems like the perfect time to make some announcements on our recent “changes” and introduce our customers to our new Territory Sales Manager in the East End and congratulate one of our Sales Team on their recent promotion.

Jennifer Lee-Bowermann is our newest “bundle of joy” having started with Best Packaging this past winter to help us with our east end sales division. Coming from Combi Equipment; Jennifer brings a wealth of knowledge to our team so please take a moment to introduce yourself to Jennifer via her linkedin profile or drop by the PACKEX show in June to say hello!

To help in our quest to educate the public regarding packaging tape….we thought we would throw a little glossary of terms your way to help you look even smarter in front of your boss.

On a serious note, it is important for companies using packaging tape to be able to choose the correct adhesive and strength when deciding on a product to seal their cartons and boxes. Choosing the wrong tape can cost you time and money not to mention the disruption in production efficiency.

Here are some common terms you may come across when researching your packaging tape needs:

Tensile Strength: Measures the force required to pull something to the point where it breaks.
Elongation: How far a tape can stretch before it breaks. Elongation is commonly measured in a percentage of stretch and tensile strength is measure in pounds.
Backing Material: Material of the tape that the adhesive is applied to. Common tape backing materials are vinyl, cloth, and polypropylene.
Core Size: The inside roll diameter of a tape.
Length: The length of the tape on the roll. Commonly measured in meters, yards, or feet.
Width: The width of the tape on the roll. Commonly measured in millimeters or inches.
Thickness: How thick a tape is. Commonly measured in mils (milli-inch) which is one-thousandths of an inch or 25.4 microns.

We leave you now with a little history lesson on an all time favorite……..Scotch Tape:

Richard Drew was an engineer for 3M in the mid 1920’s. He began to develop a two inch wide tan tape with a pressure sensitive backing in 1925. The intention was to provide auto painters with a tape to help them cover items that are not to be painted. When Drew was testing the tape to see how much more adhesive was needed a painter became frustrated and told Drew to “Take this tape back to those Scotch bosses of yours and tell them to put more adhesive on it!” The Scotch name was applied to the entire line of 3M tapes after that.

The first tape that Drew invented was composed of oil, resins, and rubber. When the adhesive is applied to its backing it must be in a liquid state to spread. These days, chemist use a chemical or physical process to transform the adhesive into a bonding agent. The method used depends on the desired strength of the bonding agent.

The next important Scotch invention was in 1932 when the first hand held tape dispenser was invented. It was composed of cast iron and weighed almost 7 lbs. After that the “snail” Scotch’s iconic tape dispenser was invented in 1937.

Since the invention of the hand held Scotch tape dispenser, Scotch tape is a household name! Often times it is used as a general term for people looking for a clear adhesive tape. Best Packaging offers Scotch Brand tape along with Tartan Brand tape, both are which 3M adhesive tapes.

Packaging Tape For Dummies

First of all, you are not a dummy.

We just thought since we are in the business of providing packaging products for customers who require packaging products – some of you would appreciate this useful little post when sourcing out adhesives – especially the kind we sell 😉

Ask yourself this: Do you need packaging tape for storing goods OR for shipping goods?

The two most common adhesives you are going to come across when sourcing tape will be Acrylic Packaging Tape and Hot Melt Adhesive Tape.

Acrylic Packaging Tape is ideal when you would like to store goods. This type of adhesive can handle a variety of temperatures and settings including warehouses, refrigerated facilities and storage units. Packaging tapes with Acrylic adhesives can keep boxes sealed for several years without yellowing or peeling. It is common knowledge in the industry that an Acrylic tape works best after it’s initial application as they will strengthen over time.

Hot Melt Packaging Tape (which does not require heat to be applied by the way…) is commonly used when shipping goods due to it’s superior holding power and high initial tack. Many shipped goods are handled roughly in transit so it is important that the tape applied ensures the box remains sealed from location to location.

Once you have determined the type of adhesive will work with your application; here are some other key considerations will help you make the most informed decision.

Width: The most commonly requested widths for packaging tape are 2″ (48mm) and 3″ (72mm) For most applications, 2″ packaging tape will work and it is often used on lightweight, small to medium boxes. If you have a larger or heavier box; you may want to consider 3″. How the tape is being applied and what the end user requests can also determine which width would work, but our tape specialists can help you out if you need to get into why size matters….

Length: Always pay close attention to roll length. Depending on your method of applying tape (dispenser vs. case sealer) – the length of roll you require will be very important. The most common length for rolls being dispensed by hand are 100m while the long rolls which are used on case sealing equipment can vary from 914m to 1862m….it depends on your needs and budget.

Thickness: We in the packaging business will always refer to mil thickness when referencing tape. The thicker the tape, the stronger the hold. While most will get away with a thinner tape economically – they may experience breakage during application or in transit. We carry a full line of packaging tapes suitable for all applications and budgets – onsite visits will ensure that you are purchasing the appropriate adhesive for your project from start to finish.

Color: The most popular color requested is clear. It is the most economical and practical choice for many industries. Tapes can be customized with printed logos, warnings or specific colors so if you have a special project in mind, it is always good to ask about your options.

Choosing the Right Tape.

Packaging Tapes generally have two applications; sealing cartons for storage of goods or sealing cartons for shipment of goods. Obviously there are many other adhesives/uses on the market, but let’s just focus on our current love affair with the Packaging Kind.

It does make a difference as to which tape you use and there are several factors to consider when sourcing out your packaging needs:

Application: Obviously you need to consider what needs sealing.
Package Weight & Size: Heavier Packages require thicker tape. Larger boxes need wider tape.
Dispenser Size: How will you be applying your adhesive to the cartons?

Storage of boxed goods and shipping of boxed goods require different types of adhesives. You will need to take into consideration the whether the goods are being shipped or stored, the weight and size of your goods, appearance of the boxes (on the shelf, door to door, commercial) and the longevity the adhesive required. Other factors may be manner in which the item is shipped or stored (cold/temperatures, overseas, security) as well as the product itself. We have had many customers insist that the desired look of the sealed carton from manufacturer to consumer is a top priority for them.

Another factor when sourcing your packaging needs will be how the adhesive will be applied to the carton – this is where size of roll and length will come in. When the operator is applying tape by hand; the use of tape gun dispensers will require smaller rolls and are applied manually. This would be a time consuming, labor intensive way to seal multiple boxes at larger plants running high production so some customers use carton sealing equipment. Basically the equipment is designed to seal the cartons for you with help from an operator (semi automatic) or fully controlled by the line (automatic). These machines (and there are many…) require larger rolls capable of running at high speed to seal cartons. Either way, size does matter 😉

Sustainability is a key consideration in today’s search for packaging solutions. It is a strategy that can reduce packaging & shipping costs, as well as help the environment.
